Retention Education
My retainer feels tight. Is that normal?
Yes — and it is actually a good sign. A snug retainer means it is doing its job. Teeth naturally shift over time, even slightly, so when you put your retainer in after a break (even just a few days), you may notice pressure. This is your retainer gently guiding your teeth back to their correct position. Wear it consistently and the tightness typically eases within a few days. If pain persists beyond a week, contact your orthodontist.
I have not worn my retainer in months (or years). Is it too late?
No, it is not too late. This is the most common concern we hear, and the answer is always the same: it is never too late to protect your smile. If your old retainer does not fit anymore, that simply means your teeth have shifted — which is completely normal. Your orthodontist can take a new intraoral scan of where your teeth are now, and we will manufacture a retainer to hold them in their current position. You do not need braces again. You just need a retainer that fits.
Why do teeth shift after braces?
Tooth movement after orthodontic treatment is a natural biological process. Your teeth are held in place by periodontal ligaments — tiny elastic fibers that have memory. After braces are removed, these ligaments want to pull teeth back toward their original positions. Studies show that nearly all orthodontic patients experience some degree of relapse without consistent retainer wear. This is why retainers are not optional — they are essential.
How often should I replace my retainer?
We recommend replacing your retainer at least once a year. Over time, retainers accumulate bacteria and biofilm that cannot be fully removed with cleaning. They also lose their shape gradually. Smile Protection Plan members get preferred pricing on replacements, making annual renewal easy and affordable.
My retainer does not fit anymore. What should I do?
Do not force it. If your retainer no longer seats properly, your teeth have likely shifted since it was made. This is normal. Visit your orthodontist for a new intraoral scan. They will capture where your teeth are now, and we will manufacture a new retainer from that scan. Your new retainer will fit perfectly.
What is the difference between clear and Hawley retainers?
Clear retainers (Essix) are transparent, thin plastic trays that are virtually invisible. Hawley retainers are the classic wire-and-acrylic design. Both are effective. Clear retainers are more discreet; Hawley retainers are more durable and adjustable. Your orthodontist can recommend which type is best.
Can I order a retainer without visiting a dentist?
You will need an intraoral scan from your orthodontist or dentist. This 3D scan captures the exact position of your teeth and is what our labs use to manufacture your custom retainer. We do not use mail-in impression kits. Most orthodontists can do this scan in under 5 minutes.
What is the Smile Protection Plan?
A one-time enrollment that gives you lifetime access to preferred wholesale pricing on all replacement retainers. No monthly fees, no annual renewals, no hidden charges. Enroll once, covered for life.
How do I care for my retainer?
Rinse with cool water every time you remove it. Clean daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap (not toothpaste). Never use hot water. Store in its case when not in use. For deeper cleaning, soak in a retainer cleaning solution once a week.
